Could the long talked about Bioshock movie be back on? It could be a possibility, as Sony Pictures has recently registered several domain names. Kotaku reported that Sony registered the domain names bioshock-movie.com, bioshock-movie.net, and bio-shock.net. Sony Pictures wasn’t originally involved in bringing the game to the big screen, but as all three of these domains have Sony Pictures listed under their registration information it now appears that they may be doing so.
Originally, Universal Pictures was going to develop the film back in 2008, and it was going to helmed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). Verbinski ended up backing out a year later, when production halted due to budget concerns and the fact the director wanted an R rating. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) was then set to take over the reins, but things never got going, and Ken Levine ultimately axed the entire project.
Levine says, “And so they brought another director in, and I didn’t really see the match there. Take-Two is one of those companies that gives a lot of trust to their creative people, and so they said to me, ‘If you want to kill it Ken, kill it.’ And I killed it. Which was weird, having been a screenwriter going around begging to rewrite any script to being in a position where you’re killing a movie that you worked so much on. It was saying ‘You know what? I don’t need to compromise. I had the [BioShock] world, and I didn’t want to see it done in a way I didn’t think was right.”
Could Levine, who is currently working on a script for a new Logan’s Run movie, be involved with writing the script for a Bioshock film himself? Kotaku raised that possibility, as Levine has said he would consider working on a Bioshock screenplay after Bioshock Infinite had been completed. In February, Levine shut down his studio Irrational Games, leaving the Bioshock property in the hands of 2K Games.
If more surfaces on this story, we’ll bring it to you. Stay tuned.
