Confession of Tom Ryder

imagesI used to pronounced the word Tomb Raider, as “Tom Ryder” when was a kid.  Since that moment, I became infatuated with her. With that bodacious figure and a strong female lead, she stood out from other heroines. While I only played the games with female for my fantasy in the past, I really like this strong females in gaming especially Jill Valentine of Resident Evil 3. Anyway….. lets move on to the review of latest incarnation of Lara Croft, simply titled as Tomb Raider.

You have to wait longer, future Lara Croft

Before I come to my review I would like to say the first Tomb Raider was Legend. I tried to played Angel of Darkness despite negative review on them but my PS2 decided to died once. But the Tomb Raider I really enjoyed is he remake of first Tomb Raider. But that was a long ago and I don’t really remember of the games. Fast foward to present day, I am excited Crystal Dynamic announced the reboot of Tomb Raider. What I really like to know is how Tomb Raider would’ve response to the rise of Uncharted series. Another fact is Square-Enix published them which by now you should know that I am a huge fan of SE the company, not the people inside SE.

Lara proves that bravery comes from the fear itself

My first impression were when playing TR likes the one when I played the first Uncharted which was a superb experience to say at least. Although TR gameplay seems like UC(Uncharted) at first with all the jumping, the innovative thing gotta say the covering system which is the best. Unlike any action games, UC ncluded where we need to find a cover and press a button to duck, Lara will duck automatically once there is a presence of enemies. There also a RPG elements where Lara needed to level up in order to acquire a new or an upgrade version for set of skills. Lara also can upgrade the weapons she acquire through out the campaign once in the camp which is essential in open world game such as TR itself. The camp itself act as a fast travel station in case we missed something such as collectibles and an optional tomb to be raided. Yes, the tomb is now only optional which disappointed me bit but with its great origin story, none of that are matter.

Come here you silly dead men with a bow.

Another part where TR excites me was when Lara found something that can be use to her advantage such as a rope where she can connect a gap between mountains and get across them safely and a lighter where not only when she needs the source of light, but also used as a weapon of mass destruction. I don’t whether I’m suck in TR but I found stealth are the most important than it is in UC because when you get caught in UC, I can still get to clear the area while once you get caught in TR for a few last area of the game, the percentage rate that you will clear the area is slim as a thread. Maybe that what the developer wants you, as a player want to experience.

“You can do it Lara. After all, you’re a Croft.” “I don’t think I’m that kind of Croft.” “Sure you are. You just don’t know it yet.” This was, to me, a great memorable scene

Speaking of that, Crystal Dynamic were serious enough about bringing Lara Croft back to life with this reboot, Why not with its emotional story and I really like of how human Lara is in this installment. From her struggle to survive on the island of Yamatai which include her first kill where later she herself is shocked after killing one of the cult member to the embodiment of who is Lara Croft as any of  true TR fans known her is a true roller coaster ride and I tell you it was that fun. I remember there was a controversy surrounding the Survival trailer and to TR defenses, I would said that how normal human would react once a stranger at best, threaten you possibly to kills you. The gameplay might be found in any games but for the story of a game, that was a nice origin to be enjoy with. The fact that they put a note on the credit says it all.

Watch your back Nathan, for I’m back

On a side note however, I hope not only a games like TR, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs getting a positive review but also any future FF especially with the imminent return of Lightning in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 because who want to support a publisher who its subsidiary company can make make a great games while SE themselves while could make a great game themselves, but couldn’t garnered a positive response just like those three games I mentioned.

Didn’t find Angel of Darkness as bad as most (great save system for that game) but it was a weaker entry for the series. Enjoyed Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld, but I think this reboot is the best entry in the franchise to date. It’s story was well told (first time I actually felt afraid for Lara) and the controls were tight. The tombs were a nice break from the intense action. Looking forward to the next Tomb Raider game.

While the Tomb Raider franchise is great, I’ve always found that the Uncharted trilogy clear-cut destroys TR, and is of far better quality. The gameplay, the stories, the presentation, the atmosphere, the score (especially 3), and the genuine caring relationship between Nate and Sully, makes Uncharted head and shoulders above TR…. but TR is nice. 😀
