Confession of Undercover Police

The success of Gran Theft Auto III has spawned so many ‘clone’, True Crime included. Unlike GTA III, True Crime seems to be focused on undercover police rather than criminal on the loose.  Supposedly, third TC take place in Hong Kong. The teaser is showed  in the E3 convention later. Fast-foward to years later, True Crime series seem to be ended after several difficulty until Square-Enix take helm to published the long awaited game and renamed as Sleeping Dogs. The story begins when Wei Shen, an undercover police, busted after a drug deal. While in prison. Wei meet with his friend, Jackie Ma who is a member of Sun On Yee triad. After convincing his superior, Wei is on a mission to infiltrate Sun On Yee ranks. Along the way, Wei meets some new friend and enemy alike until the day where each of Sun On Yee higher members crave for take-over. Can Wei Shen stops the power struggle among each other?

GTA clone? Maybe but with its own identity, there is no such thing.

Sleeping Dogs, like in other sandbox-open world hybrid games, let player roam the environment freely if not taking the mission to advanced the storylines but with the inclusion of RPG elements. With this game taking place on Hong Kong, hand-to-hand combat are heavily emphasized and to many, it was a job well done by United Front Games as the Kung-Fu were smooth till the end. To activate more Kung-Fu move, 11 collectibles has to be found around the city. Player also can hijack a car by performing a jump from currently use car. Certain action you take as Wei Shen may influence your mission rating and reputation represented by Face XP, Police XP, and Triad XP. Your reputation dictates which attire is available to Wei or which type of transport you can drive, which sometime can annoy me.

In SD, we never ride alone

As I said earlier, Every mission and side-mission you take, shrine and collectibles you find scattered around the city and, even date a girls gives you a worth of experience points. But I see the dating is worthless as you can gain the bonus skills after one date, because every girl is limited to one date only. Two if the first encounter with every girls count. It might as well means that we can delay each date until late of game but there is no story development for each girls which is disappointing. Fortunately though the club singer of Sleeping Dogs world, Vivienne Lu, has a bit of story to her relationship to Wei. Speaking of the characters of Sleeping Dogs, stars such as Emma Stone (although it was before she achieving fame, I guess) and Lucy Liu have every right to be praised. Hong Kong own Edison Chen is good at portraying Jackie Ma though it could have been better. The story has a feel of cheesy police movie but it was a good move as it was intended to pay tribute to any (especially Hong Kong) action flicks. If this was a reboot of True Crime, it is a definitely a great reboot to the series. Not saying Gran Theft Auto is a bad games but if any seeks for an alternative, Sleeping Dogs is truly a game anyone ask for.

P/S: How can I forget Carmine Falcone from Batman Begins.

Sleeping Dogs is fine, but it is no GTA IV. It is a good alternative if you’re one of those people who like open-world crime games, but won’t play GTA IV, for some reason; otherwise, just stick with GTA.

When I play GTA, I never seems to completed them. Only years later after I abandoned them, I manage to complete them

The moment I get my hands on a new GTA, I play the holy hell out of it. I am a very big fan of the franchise, and have finished every game (except for the original, because it sucks).
