Escape ‘The Impossible Layer’ In Playtonic’s New Yooka-Laylee-Inspired Mario Maker 2 Course

YK

Having released Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair to great reviews just yesterday, we’d like to think the good folks over at Playtonic Games are sitting with their feet up, relaxing after shipping one of them there vidya games. Of course, as with all devs who have just shipped a game, they’re probably still glued to their workstations addressing minor issues and generally buffing the game to the Nth degree, but we hope they get some well-deserved time off.

To celebrate the release, the team have been playing Super Mario Maker 2 again – Nintendo of America’s official Twitter account has shared a special course celebrating Yooka and Laylee’s return. Entitled ‘The Impossible Layer’, the developers employ a state-changing mechanic that recalls The Impossible Lair and its level layouts which alter depending on your actions (water might flood a level and change things up, for example).

The new Mario Maker 2 course features rising and falling water which switches to poison when you head through a pipe to a nighttime version of the same level:

This isn’t the first time the Playtonic team has shared its Mario Making prowess – the team were gracious enough to share a whopping four Mario Maker 2 courses with us back in August, so be sure to check them out along with the new level above (you can see our lovely Alex tackle them at the bottom of the page). With the recent update for Mario Maker 2 that finally allows you to play with (and against) friends online, now’s a great time to revisit the game and give these a whirl. As you can see above, Nintendo mentions more indie dev courses to come, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see more Mario Maker content updates coming in the not-too-distant future.

That is if you’re not already knee-deep in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, which you should be. As we said in our review, it’s the spiritual successor to Donkey Kong Country that fans have been waiting for. What’s not to like?!

Let us know if you try out the Mario Maker 2 course for yourself, and feel free to share how you’re getting on with Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair below. So many games!
