New Releases for the Week of December 25- Happy Holidays!

It’s the last full week of the year, and as we close out 2016 there are no new game releases, but there is something for the film aficionado. Opening in theaters on Christmas Day is the drama Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Hitting home video this week is the thriller When the Bough Breaks, the Western flick In a Valley of Violence, and the true life inspired Snowden. It’s been an interesting year that featured a lot of loss in the entertainment industry. Those lost include music legends David Bowie, Prince, and Leonard Cohen, TV personalities Florence Henderson and Alan Thicke, and notable actors such as Robert Vaughn and Alan Rickman. The list of course, and sadly, is much longer, and the world will miss all of the great talent that is now gone. Along with the tragedies we did have some great pieces of entertainment to help take our minds off of the daily troubles in the world. This year many years of waiting finally came to an end as we saw the release of Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian. The Call of Duty franchise has jumped into space while Battlefield looked to the past, and Titanfall 2 brought us a unique campaign comprised of spectacular platforming and great gunplay. We saw thoughtful and mind provoking indies like Inside and The Witness, and experienced some great emotions in games like Unravel and the conclusion of Nathan Drake’s story with Uncharted 4. Naturally there were plenty of sequels (Dishonored 2, Gears of War 4, and Watch Dogs 2) and some old franchises were made new again (DOOM, Skyrim Special Edition, Modern Warfare Remastered). The big screen brought us plenty of thrills as well, giving us one of the funniest comic book movies in Deadpool, a thoughtful and atmospheric period piece horror film in The Witch, and Disney continued its trend of putting out great live versions of older animated classics (The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon) as well as some terrific animated movies (Zootopia, Finding Dory, Moana). And Rogue One proved a Star Wars movie could stand on its one without being a numbered episode. On television the CW network felt right at home with comic book shows, giving us an entertaining crossover between 4 series (Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) while Netflix gave us the dark and gritty side of Marvel with the second season of Daredevil (which introduced the Punisher via a fantastic performance by Jon Bernthal) and Luke Cage. HBO delivered with one of the best seasons of Game of Thrones yet as the series has now gone beyond George R.R. Martin’s books, and gave us a new sci-fi series in the stunning Westworld. Of course everything mentioned is just a small slice of the great entertainment options 2016 gave us, and it’s looking like 2017 has more in store for us. Here’s hoping 2017 will continue to bring us great things to entertain us, and I hope all of our readers have a happy and safe holiday season. Now on to our short list. As always, release dates are subject to change.
