PSA: DO NOT Buy Nintendo Switch Games from China

As some of you might know by now, the Nintendo Switch was able to be launched in China last year thanks to the partnership with Tencent. However, there is one small thing that wasn’t know about the Chinese launch that you should take note of.

According to games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the game cartridges on the Tencent version of the Nintendo Switch will only work on Chinese consoles. This means that if you were to export them out of the country, it will not work with non-Tencent versions of the system.

Interestingly, Nintendo Switch gamers in China can freely use game cartridges from outside their country. The only downside to this is that they cannot get any online features from them. If there ever was a China-exclusive game, such as the upcoming Rabbids Adventure Party, you won’t be able to play it. Even the Chinese eShop is region-locked.

You might be wonder why this would matter to you if you’re not from China. It’s important to note because if you ever want to import games for the Nintendo Switch, make sure it’s not from China because it simply won’t work on your system. This will ensure that you won’t end up wasting money on games you can’t play.
