Minecraft, the popular world building game, just keeps building its sales figures. Confirmed in a tweet by creator Markus “Notch” Persson, the game has now sold over 14 million copies on the PC and Mac, raising its total on all platforms to around an estimated 35 million. The game passed the million mark on the PS3 last week, hitting that in just five weeks. It has sold 10 million copies on the Xbox 360 and another 10 million on mobile platforms with the Pocket Edition. The figures aren’t showing any signs of slowing down, and with versions for the PS4 and Xbox One on the way, they are only going to increase.
Both Eurogamer and Polygon have reported that layoffs have hit the UK branch of Ghost Games, the developer that had been handed the reins to the Need for Speed franchise by EA from Criterion, and the studio did put out Need for Speed Rivals. According to Eurogamer, sources told them that the artists have been let go, putting the current Need for Speed game on ice for the time being. Coders for the studio were offered work on other titles by EA. Polygon reports that full-timers were offered positions working on Visceral’s rumored Battlefield game. What this means for the future of the franchise is unclear. More on this as we get it.
A poster at the Jazwares booth at the Nuremberg Toy Fair seems to indicate a new Sonic game is on the way for the PS4, Xbox One, and the Wii U. The image below was spotted by Spindash.
As you can see, the poster clearly indicates a new title coming in 2015 for the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U. An exclusive partnership was announced by SEGA last year with Nintendo to produce the next three Sonic titles on the 3DS and Wii U. Sonic: Lost World was the first of these titles, and was met with mediocre reviews. The second, Mario & Sonic at Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which released in November 2013, was also poorly received. The third title has yet to be announced. It’s possible that the deal has been changed, but this may be a fourth title for the three platforms, with a Nintendo exclusive possibly coming later this year. Sonic will next be seen as one of the fighters in the upcoming Super Smash Bros., which is set for release sometime this year.
