Following the tragic death of star Paul Walker and his friend, Roger Rodas, in an automobile accident, production of the seventh film in the Fast & Furious franchise has been halted by Universal Studios. It was noted that though re-shoots will not resume in Atlanta as planned, they are only delayed, being on hold according to The Hollywood Reporter. Director James Wan held a conference call with Universal to determine how to proceed with the project while being respectful of the late actor. Time is being granted to the cast and crew to process and grieve, holding off on making any details concerning rewrites in the wake of Walker’s death. The movie was more than halfway completed when the tragedy occurred. Fast & Furious 7 is still currently slated for theatrical release on July 11, 2014.
In other news from Universal, a release date for the anticipated fifth installment of the Bourne saga has been given a release date. The Justin Lin helmed action sequel, Bourne 5, is slated for release on August 14, 2015. The movie stars Jeremy Renner reprising his role of Aaron Cross, though, despite rumors, Matt Damon will not be returning in his role as Jason Bourne. Lin is also producing the movie, along with Frank Marshall, Ben Smith, and Jeffrey Weiner.
Another action film from the studio, Lucy, directed by Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element), has also been given a release date. The film centers on a woman caught up by accident in a dark deal, and transforms into a merciless warrior to turn the tables on her captors. Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow from the Marvel films) and is set to hit theaters on August 8, 2014.
