I was something of a jigsaw connoisseur at one point in my life. That point was early childhood, between the ages of six and eight. Since then, I’ve not touched jigsaw, nor have I ever felt inclined to spend an afternoon putting a picture together that someone else has ripped apart. It just seems like a massive waste of my time, really.
But there are those who love a good puzzle, and Jigsaw Solace was made for them. Not for me.
As the name suggests, Jigsaw Solace is a game about jigsaw puzzles. You’re given a bunch of pictures and your job is to put them back together by dragging the pieces into place on the screen. It’s as simple as that. There’s really not much else to the gameplay.
You have options to make it easier or harder. You can have your pictures cut up into more or fewer pieces, depending on what you fancy tackling. It’s still just a jigsaw puzzle. If anything, playing the game on PS4 kind of made me wish I had an actual puzzle to play on my dining room table. The controls are fine, but there’s something odd about doing such a puzzle using a DualShock 4. Jigsaw puzzles are tactile things, and rummaging around to find the corner pieces and the edges are all much easier to do with the puzzles in your hand.
Honestly, I don’t think Jigsaw Solace needed to be made. Sure, it works and if you love jigsaw puzzles you’ll get a kick out of it, but some things are best left in the real world. My advice would be to go down to your local charity shop where you’ll be able to grab a handful of puzzles for the same price as this digital oddity.
Jigsaw Solace PS4 Review
- Overall – Not Bad – 5/10
Jigsaw Solace is cheap and cheerful enough for hardcore jigsaw puzzle fans, of which there can’t be many, right? It works as advertised but it’s not really comparable to the actual experience of putting together a puzzle.
- Clean presentation
- Lots of puzzles
- Not really fun
- Selecting options is a bit fiddly
- Doesn’t have any 1000-piece puzzles for the most extreme, hardcore, professional jigsaw puzzle aficionados.
