Summer movies: May releases

The summer movie season is here, and that means plenty of action, comedy, and big special effects are headed to a screen near you. Below are some of the biggest releases for May that you may want to check out. So grab some popcorn and enjoy the trailers below!

MAY 1

Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron

Probably the most anticipated sequel of the year opens things up with a bang. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) creates an AI in the form of Ultron (James Spader) that threatens humanity, and it’s up to the Avengers- Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), and Iron Man- to stop him. Adding to the threat are two super-powered individuals- the Scarlet Witch (Elisabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron- Taylor Johnson). Samuel L. Jackson also returns to reprise his role of Nick Fury and Paul Bettany appears as Vision. Joss Whedon again returns to helm the action as director/writer. Look for this to have a huge opening weekend in the US, as it’s already performing well overseas.

MAY 8

Hot Pursuit

Reese Witherspoon teams up with Sofia Vergara in this action comedy directed by former choreographer Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip). The story deals with Witherspoon’s uptight cop protecting Vergara, who is naturally the widow of a drug boss. Bad guys pursue, and it remains to be seen if these two will be a hit with audiences like the Sandra Bullock/ Melissa McCarthy action comedy The Heat.

Maggie

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a father whose daughter (Abigail Breslin) is slowly turning into a zombie. He stays be her side to protect her in the face of the oncoming apocalypse in this horror drama serving as the feature debut for director Henry Hobson, who previously directed the trailer for the videogame Resistance 3 and the title sequence for Killzone: Shadow Fall.

MAY 15

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller brings back his iconic post-apocalyptic character of Max, this time played by Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises). Joining Hardy in his adventures across the wasteland is the mysterious Furiousa, played by Charlize Theron (Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman). Expect plenty of crazy car stunts in this sci-fi thriller that just may resurrect the franchise.

MAY 22

Tomorrowland

George Clooney and Britt Robertson (The Secret Circle) team up for this action adventure from director Brad Bird (The Incredibles). The sci-fi from Walt Disney Studios looks tantalizing enough, and with a script from Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Bird looks to provide us with enough mystery to keep audiences engaged.

Spy

Melissa McCarthy re-teams with her director from The Heat, Paul Feig, in this action comedy about a lowly CIA analyst who needs to go into the field to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer. The talented cast includes Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Jason Statham (Furious 7), Morena Baccarin (Serenity), Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), and Allison Janney (The West Wing, Mom). The pairing of McCarthy and Feig could result in another hit, as the action and comedy looks great from the previews.

Poltergeist

The classic horror film gets rebooted by producer Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) and director Gil Kenan (Monster House). Once again a family is tormented by malevolent spirits. The cast includes Sam Rockwell (Seven Psychopaths, Iron Man 2), Rosemarie DeWitt (The Watch), Saxon Sharbino (I Spit On Your Grave), Kennedi Clements (Jingle All the Way 2), Kyle Catlett (The Following), Jared Harris (The Quiet Ones), and Jane Adams (Happiness). There is a creepy clown doll, but it remains to be seen if this one will deliver like the original.

MAY 29

San Andreas 3D

We’ve seen this all before as a massive earthquake rocks California, but with a cast led by Dwayne Johnson (Furious 7), who always seem to prove likeable in his roles, may make this an entertaining popcorn flick. Expect plenty of hair raising rescues and some spectacular visual effects showing scenes of mass destruction. The disaster flick also stars Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief), Colton Haynes (Arrow), Carla Gugino (Sin City, Watchmen), Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four, King Arthur), and Paul Giamatti (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Rock of Ages), and is directed by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). If this turns out well could give current disaster movie king Roland Emmerich a run for his money.

And there you have it, folks. What will you be catching at your local cineplex in May? Let us know in the comments below. See you at the movies!
