The juggernaut that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to topple records at the box office. In just 20 days since its opening, the J. J. Abrams directed film has grossed $758.2 million in North America, and will easily surpass the $760.5 million made by previous record holder James Cameron’s Avatar. Avatar had topped off around $750 million after its initial 7 month run following its release to theaters in December of 2009, and then made an additional $10 million from a rerelease. The Force Awakens made $8 million alone yesterday, and has topped the box office each weekend since its release on December 18. It hit a billion dollars in world wide ticket sales in 12 days, just beating Jurassic World, which did it in 13.
To date Star Wars: The Force Awakens has raked in $1.56 billion worldwide, and has yet to debut in China (it hits theaters there this weekend). Avatar is still the reigning champ in the world wide box office with $2.78 billion. The Hollywood Reporter has stated that box office analysts predict The Force Awakens will top off at $2.2-2.4 billion dollars globally, bringing it shy of Avatar’s record but surpassing another Cameron flick, Titanic (which made $2.19 billion), for second place. It remains to be seen just how long the Force will be strong with this film, but for now the execs at Disney are feeling very good about their reportedly $4 billion investment in the franchise as polls are already showing that the next movie in the franchise, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is the top anticipated movie for 2016.
