The episode opens up with a bang, literally, as we see our protagonist get into a confrontation with a gas station convenience store owner, followed by a nicely timed explosion.
It starts off with a definite XMen-esque kind of vibe, as the team is acting under the assumption that there’s someone with unique gifts out there that either don’t know that they’re causing all this trouble, or not fully in control of their abilities. (I love that they don’t use the word “mutant” directly, but kind of dance around it.)
All in all, it wasn’t a terribly compelling episode, but we did get to see a bit more about each of the characters. We see Fitz and Simmons trying to pull a prank on Skye, with mixed results. Skye shows her compassionate side, which makes her easily the most relatable member of the team so far. We also get a little more about May and her relationship with Coulson, as well as a small peek at who she was in the past, compared to now.
The episode did have problems though. Its biggest flaw was probably its antagonist, who wasn’t terribly antagonistic in the end, even though his motives throughout the episode seemed contrary. I get that in the end, he was supposed to appear sympathetic, but it’s still hard to feel for the guy after he deliberately goes out of his way to cause destruction, no matter how well meaning his intent may be.
There are some nice scenes sprinkled throughout the episode though. I’m a fan of the little talks between Coulson and Skye and how they seem to have a unique relationship, compared to Coulson’s relationship with everyone else. There was also a cute moment at the end involving a prank and Fitz that was pretty funny. (Not sure how Coulson managed to keep a straight face there.)
Best Line of the Episode: “I think she needs to get laid.” Ward’s reaction to that is great, by the way.
Unfortunately, the next episode is a couple weeks away, but looks to up the ante, with a new agent and more action than we’ve seen in the past few episodes.
