One of the most famous video games of all time, and arguably one of the most important and influential, is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Sitting at the very top of many players’ lists of favourite games, Ocarina of Time is one of those titles that really is a ‘must-play’ experience, partly thanks to that level of hype and adoration it so often receives.
Of course, Ocarina of Time, like most Zelda games, is a purely single-player adventure, where players take control of Link to explore, slay monsters, solve puzzles, and generally save the day. But what would happen if it suddenly supported co-op play? And what if that co-op play wasn’t restricted to just two players locally, but up to 15 players online?
Well, this just so happens to be exactly what one team of fans is attempting to create. Under the project name ‘OoT Online’, this mod aims to transform the beloved game entirely, running it on a server which can host multiple players at the same time.
You can see an early build of the mod in action below; at the moment, two players can freely run around Hyrule as they please, taking on monsters, collecting rupees, and more. In a nice touch, players aren’t restricted to the same area; instead, each player can freely explore wherever they like, all while still being in the very same game world as their friend.
The project has some rather ambitious goals that it hopes to meet, including that aforementioned support for up to 15 players and even a player vs player mode which could completely change everything you’ve come to know and love about the game.
The real experience will always be something special, and fan-made mods may never be able to truly compare, but this is a cool little project which could create some fun and quirky gameplay. You can keep an eye on its progress here if you’re interested.
